Choosing Aviation Technology Without Overbuying

Define the workflow first

Technology purchases are easier when the workflow is defined first. Do you need a device for charts, training, logbook management, weather information, documents, or all of these? Different missions can justify different hardware.

Battery and power

Battery life matters in aviation because access to a charger may not always be convenient. Check realistic screen-on time rather than only the manufacturer's headline figure. Also consider how the device will be charged in the aircraft and what backup power is available.

Screen and usability

A screen that looks excellent indoors may behave differently in bright cockpit conditions. Consider brightness, touch responsiveness, glove use if relevant, mounting options, and whether text can be read without excessive zooming.

Mounting safely

Any mount should keep the device secure without blocking important instruments, controls, emergency equipment, or outside visibility. The correct position depends on the aircraft, so there is no universal “best” mount.

Software matters

A powerful device cannot compensate for poor software. Look for offline capability where appropriate, clear update policies, reliable data sources, and an interface that does not create unnecessary workload.

Avoid single-point dependence

Important operational information should not depend on one battery, one application, or one internet connection. Know the approved and appropriate backup methods for your operation.

AIRVENOR takeaway

Buy technology for a defined aviation workflow, not because a specification sheet looks impressive.
