Why fuel planning matters

  3. Calculate time en route. Divide distance by groundspeed (TAS corrected for wind).
  4. Find the fuel burn rate. From your POH, in gallons or liters per hour at your cruise power.
  5. Trip fuel = time × burn rate.
  6. Add taxi, climb, and descent — usually small for light aircraft, but not zero.
  7. Add contingency (5%), alternate fuel if required, and final reserve (30 min minimum).

120 NM ÷ 105 kt = 1.14 h (1h 09min)

Step 2 — Trip fuel:

1.14 h × 8.5 gal/h = 9.7 gal

Step 3 — Add contingency (5%):

9.7 × 0.05 = 0.5 gal

Step 4 — Final reserve (30 min at 8.5 gal/h):

0.5 h × 8.5 = 4.3 gal

Step 5 — Add taxi, climb, descent:

9.7 + 0.5 + 4.3 + 1.5 = 16 gal
